It may seem like common sense, but there are several things you can do to reduce your chances of getting sick this flu season. The cold weather goes hand-in-hand with the spread of the flu, but this year was a little different: Not only do we have to worry about the seasonal flu, but also the potentially deadly H1N1 Swine Flu.
Here are some steps you can take to prevent yourself and others from the swine flu (or any flu virus for that matter):
- Clean Hands – It seems obvious, but it can’t be stressed enough – especially to children: Washing your hands frequently with soap and warm water will help protect you from germs. You can also use a liquid hand sanitizer when no water is available.
- Hands Off Face – You should try to avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his/her face.
- Vitamins – A weak immune system is a big problem during flu season. Fruits and vegetables are the best way to get immune-boosting vitamins, but, realistically speaking, few adults actually eat enough of them. Taking a good multi-vitamin and some extra vitamin C can be very helpful in supplementing you diet, and your immune system.
- Stay Away, Stay Home - Avoid close contact with people who are sick. And when you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too. If possible, stay home from work or school.
- Get Vaccinated – The single best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated each year, according to the CDC.
