5 Ways to Choose the Right Hearing Protection |

OSHA requires that a variety of hearing protection be available to employees at a work site. A “variety” can be defined as 3 different hearing protectors. This can be achieved in any combination – like 2 different earplugs and 1 earmuff; 1 earplug and 2 different hearing bands; 3 different earplugs; etc…
Here are 5 ways to make sure you are choosing the right hearing protection for yourself:
- You must first measure noise levels and identify a range of suitable protection. The hearing protector you choose must supply an effective amount of protection against the level and type of noise you will be exposed to.
- It is extremely important that the hearing protector fits correctly. Noise reduction is dependant on a good seal, or blocking any air leakage which would allow sound to enter the ear. For this reason, the hearing protector must fit properly whether over the ear or in the ear.
- Make sure that the hearing protector is comfortable enough to wear for long periods of time. For example, earmuffs may feel too hot and heavy in some environments, making earplugs a better choice.
- Hearing protectors often make communication difficult by reducing and distorting sounds. If you often rely on communication in the work place, choose hearing protection that is designed for this. You may prefer earmuffs so that you can lift up the muffs to hear speech. Some earmuffs even have a push-to-listen feature, allowing verbal communication to be heard at the push of a button.
- Maintaining your hearing protector is also a factor. Depending on your personal preference or the time you have to care for your hearing protectors may also influence your decision. Most earplugs must be replaced on a daily basis or whenever they become soiled. Using an unclean earplug may lead to an ear infection. Earmuffs should be cleaned frequently and should not be passed from person to person. Earmuffs should also be inspected regularly and replaced at the first sign of wear and tear.
Employers should keep in mind that everyone’s ears are different. By offering several different styles of hearing protectors to employees, you will improve the chances that workers will wear their hearing protection, and thus increase worker compliance.
